Apple may release a new iPad stylus this year. Apple hasn’t said anything, but speculations suggest the Apple Pencil 3 will have Find My tracking and a new tip-changing mechanism.

Apple Pencil 3 Release Date?

All Apple Pencil devices were released in November. The Apple Pencil 3 release date may follow. Not sure if it’ll happen this year or if Apple will wait longer.

We anticipated a 2021 Apple Pencil. Looking at prior release dates shows why:

1st-generation: November 11, 2015
2nd-generation: November 7, 2018

Apple Pencil 3

Apple released the USB-C Apple Pencil in November 2023, breaking a three-year cycle. Rumors suggest the Apple Pencil 3rd generation will arrive soon.

Apple Pencil 3

The upcoming Apple Pencil will likely cost $129, like the 2 (which will be discounted when the 3rd-generation comes out).

Pre-Order Information

Currently, the Apple Pencil 3 is rumored. The Apple Store will sell it when it’s available.

Apple Pencil 3 Hardware & Features

Find My support is a new feature we like. This was reported by 9to5Mac after a beta iPadOS release mentioned a new Apple Pencil. If this arrives, you can use Find My to find your iPad, watch, phone, and new Apple Pencil.

We could even see tip replacement for specific jobs. A thicker tip may help with digital painting, while a long, thin tip may help with pencil-like strokes. No source is given, although X user Majin Bu confirms magnetic tips function. The current Apple Pencil can swap tips by unscrewing them, however there are no alternative shapes.

We want fresh hues. White is great, but it’s the only option since 2015. A black, grey, or gold model would complement Apple’s other new items this year.

The latest Apple Pencil lacks pressure sensitivity, which allows you draw varied strokes depending on how hard you press. However, the latest Pencil is USB-C, unlike the 1st and 2nd-gen Apple Pencils. The 3rd-generation Apple Pencil will have this feature.

A 2020 patent shows what Apple’s futuristic stylus designers may create. The device samples real-world colors to help you match them on a computer (or iPad, if it’s an Apple Pencil). It’s like an image editing app’s color picker or eyedropper, but it works in real life.

We doubt this technology will be ready for the Apple Pencil 3, but you never know! Google Patents has further information and drawings: Computer with stylus for color sampling.

Apple Pencil 3 Support

Both Apple Pencils operate with different iPads. The upcoming Apple Pencil will work with the latest iPads, but which ones are unknown.

We think the Apple Pencil 3 will work with the same iPads as the 2nd generation:

  • iPad mini 6th gen
  • After 4th generation iPad Air
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3 and later)
  • iPad Pro 11″ (all generations)
